Philadelphia homeowners can apply for homestead exemption
Did you know you can save money on your real estate taxes? Philadelphia homeowners can apply for a Homestead exemption that would provide some relief to those who could be hit hard under Mayor Nutter’s plan to move to a new property-tax system based on market values. State lawmakers are still considering legislation needed to provide a Philadelphia homestead exemption, but homeowners may apply for the exemption until July 31. Primary residences of all homeowners are eligible regardless of age or income.
You can fill out the application here. You must include your OPA Account Number on the application. The OPA Account Number is a unique 9-digit number that identifies a property and is the same as the old BRT Account Number. If you don’t know your OPA Account Number, you can find it on your real estate tax bill or contact us and we can help!
The homestead exemption would knock $15,000 or more off of all homeowners’ assessed values. Homestead exemptions will be included in assessment change notices which will be mailed to homeowners in the fall along with a brochure about the exemption. For additional information go to the city’s website.

May Sales Trends

* Closed sales in May 2012 exceeded May 2011 by more than 15%. Pending sales in May 2012 also showed strong, coming in at 14% above last May.
Through May 2012, Montgomery County has settled 2,503 units at an average price of $302,000.
705 units settled in May 2012, up 25.4% compared to May 2011.
